Collage + oils + ink, 28×42 cm, 2007 — I’ve just found it in the old portfolios after eleven years. I even forgot I had done something like this – one of those careless improvisations from the old days, which were happening in a moment or two. Then maybe no wonder there’s still a pinch of magic of that enthusiasm from the bygone years in it. Considering it’s a kind of a relic now, and the fact that my Mum loves it the way it is, I leave it as it is, and reveal to the world with all its imperfections. It’s December already – let me be sentimental for a while.

Song of the Books, 1-2-3/5, mixed media: drypoint + collage + calligraphy, 50×50 cm, 2017. The text comes from the Irish poem by Tomás Rua Ó Súilleabháin (1785-1848) – each print has the subsequent stanza of the lament after the books lost in the sea, known as Amhrán Na Leabhar. The text was set to music and has been performed by many artists; to me the most haunting is the version by Emer Kenny, and it is her piece that most directly inspired the vision. Still, there are two prints left to be finished…
